Many managers are already familiar with various process mapping activities, but the real lean journey starts with mapping the VALUE stream of an organization.
Value stream mapping (VSM) is a sophisticated version of process mapping.
VSM builds into the map not only the physical steps of the production process, but also the information flow and a set of diagnostics that displays where value is being added, and where it is not.
The purpose of VSM is to identify the unnecessary non-value adding steps so that companies can do something about eliminating or reducing them.
To do VSM, you need only a little bit of theory and quite a lot of the specialist language that is used in the mapping process.
Like any language, the best way to learn it is to take a guide-book and start practicing.
